If you are lucky enough to have a good enough head start on preparing before the bad storm hits, get your home ready. Take down expensive decorations like art and perhaps remove furniture and in the worst cases where you know the flood will be bad, remove the carpet.
Even if you don’t have enough time for those big changes, you can unplug electronics that aren’t needed for weather updates and try to get things off the floor – such as putting washer and dryers on bricks to raise them above the floor. Turn off all water, electricity and gas before you leave the house before the flood.
Emergency Supplies
This is good for all emergencies, not just floods. Always keep a two-to-three day supply of food and clean drinking water, a first aid kit that includes any prescribed medication, flashlight, radio, cell phone, blankets and hygiene products.
